The natural wonder of Forest Park

Rising a thousand feet above the daily hustle of urban life, Forest Park spans a narrow ridge that provides sweeping views of Portland’s two prominent rivers—the Columbia and the Willamette. Once you’re up there, you can look east toward the towering peaks of the Cascade Mountains or gaze westward where the Coast Range unfolds. It’s remarkable how this vast expanse—one mile wide and seven miles long—feels entirely detached from the city’s chaos, yet it’s just minutes away from downtown.

Few city parks can match Forest Park in size and ecological diversity. Covering 5,200 acres, it serves as a crucial habitat for countless creatures, including over a hundred bird species and more than fifty different mammals. Many endangered and declining bird species find sanctuary in these woods, making the park a natural refuge for everyone who values wildlife, from casual birdwatchers to dedicated researchers.  In a time when green spaces are frequently disappearing, Forest Park stands out as a testament to Portland’s dedication to preserving wilderness.

For adventurers of all kinds, this urban forest boasts roughly 80 miles of trails that accommodate a range of interests. Wildwood Trail is the park’s crown jewel—a designated National Recreation Trail that winds over 30 miles from the edge of downtown to NW Newberry Road. Its uninterrupted, natural pathway is the longest of its kind in any American city park. Meanwhile, Leif Erikson Drive welcomes hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders to explore 11.2 miles of scenic routes free from vehicle traffic. Along both paths, numerous side trails offer endless possibilities for loops and detours.

What truly makes Forest Park exceptional is its ability to combine the familiar comforts of the city with a sense of untamed wilderness. For families seeking a weekend getaway, athletes training on rugged terrain, or anyone looking for a breath of fresh air and inspiration, the park is a rejuvenating refuge. It reminds visitors how fortunate Portland is to have a thriving, biodiverse forest right in its backyard—a place where exploration and relaxation go hand-in-hand.

We made this map for ourselves to help us discover and explore the natural wonder of Forest Park. We hope you enjoy it and find it useful as well — see you on the trails!
